Long-standing and respected commercial property development company Broadway Developments Ltd has used Malcolm & Sumner's design services for more than 12 years.
Broadway has been operating for more than 20 years, a significant achievement in the Auckland commercial property market. Director Neil Hamill attributes survival in a tough environment to a focus on quality planning, design and construction, and concentrating on meeting the needs of leading New Zealand corporate and multi-national tenants.
“We decided that at every level of our business we would excel at our relationships - with our clients, banks, the guys of site, and those providing services."
"We decided we would not do anything we would not be proud to own ourselves. That's been a good yardstick which has remained with us ever since."
Broadway keeps a close eye on quality by being property developer, investor and construction company. It uses Malcolm & Sumner to provide space planning and interior design expertise for a range of projects for demanding corporate clients.
Several Broadway projects which received the Malcolm & Sumner touch have won Property Council awards - including the LJ Smits building in East Tamaki, the 8000m² Kiwi Packaging factory (now Amcor) in Mt Wellington and the Heidelberg Head Office in Pacific Business Park.
Seagar & Partners are valuers and property consultants. They wanted an office design to reflect their non-hierarchical structure. While this sounds easy in theory, like most offices there were some situations which required an element of privacy.
"Diane achieved an office layout, which while not completely open-plan, gives a sense of visual openness to match the company's working style."
A space audit is one of the first items conducted for each new Broadway client, a task which usually falls to Diane Sumner. "We use Diane for a majority of work we have done, particularly for industrial and office developments," says Neil.
Neil says interior design expertise is also required to plan buildings which cope with tenants' future needs. There is a need to understand the generic principles of buildings and their use and how to extend their longevity.
"In interior design, that's where Diane plays a major role. With each project she leaves behind a very satisfied client."
"Usually it is where a client wants to participate and understand the process. Diane is very good at that. She develops very good relationships with people. She is well-trusted and well-respected."
"We used Diane on an Eli Lily project. Twelve years later when we did their east Auckland office, they asked if she was available. That's an indication of the regard clients have for her work."

Neil says the Radius Medical project involved more than internal layout and design. They needed to create an environment which would be enjoyed by patients from a wide spectrum of socio-economic backgrounds.
"Malcolm & Sumner achieved that very effectively. In the process, they also developed the corporate livery for Radius, which will be applied to all their medical centres."
Kiwi Packaging (now Amcor) required an innovative layout to take advantage of the design of its Auckland manufacturing plan and office. An internal landscaped courtyard linked the office to the warehouse area and provided natural light in offices which would otherwise have been closed off.
"Malcolm & Sumner developed a layout which ensured all individuals had the optimum amount of natural light, either from external windows or from the internal courtyard centrepiece which the design revolved around."
